1. Colchester: Vermont Information Processing is laying off 66 people. Its statement doesn't mention AI.
VIP, the Colchester company that makes software for beverage distributors, told staff about the cuts in company meetings Tuesday, Oct. 20. It filed the legally required notice with the state Department of Labor, and the department's database showed the number Wednesday morning: 66. The company had about 600 employees in Vermont.

Here's the timeline. Private equity firm Warburg Pincus bought VIP last year in a deal Reuters reported at $1 billion, which paid out big checks to employee-owners. In April, the company held an "AI Week" to train staff in AI software and prompting, with cash prizes. Last month it bought Encompass Technologies, a Colorado beverage software firm, and pitched the deal as a way to "accelerate AI innovation."

One employee told Seven Days there's been "a big push company-wide in the last couple months to at all times try to teach different AI tools how to do your job." Another said she was told in a meeting of about 10 minutes that she was laid off immediately, that she'd stay paid with health benefits through December, and that her login was revoked minutes later.

What VIP has said: the cuts follow "a review of our organizational structure and business priorities" as part of a move to a "Product-Led Organization." What it hasn't said: that AI caused the cuts. A Norwich University computer science professor told WCAX, "It's hard to know the interplay of the acquisition versus AI, because both are disruptive."

What we still don't know: which jobs, and whether there's added severance. The laid-off employee expected severance details later this month.

2. Your doctor's office: the state is putting $5.2 million toward AI note-takers.
Out of Vermont's first-year federal Rural Health Transformation money, $5.2 million is set aside for grants to help providers buy or lease AI transcription and scribe tools. These listen to the visit and draft the clinical notes. The line showed up in a program update to the Legislature's Health Reform Oversight Committee on Oct. 22.

The state's funding notice says the tools automate "an average of over two hours of daily administrative work" and that Vermont providers and patients report "high satisfaction" where they're already in use. Those are the state's claims, not a study we've seen. Grants run Aug. 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2027.

If your clinician starts the visit by asking whether it's OK to record, this is probably why. It's fair to ask where the recording goes and who keeps it.

3. Montpelier: an economist says the AI fight is labor versus capital.
About 100 people came to St. Augustine Catholic Church on Oct. 16 for a panel on AI and Pope Leo XIV's encyclical on the subject. UVM economist Jon Erickson put it plainly: "If AI increases productivity while the gains flow disproportionately between the people who own the technology, the intellectual property, and the financial assets, then AI may make an economy richer while simultaneously making the distribution of that wealth more unequal."

St. Michael's computer science director Greta Pangborn had a practical one. She made her students read the terms of service for these tools, and said Google Gemini's make it "absolutely clear" it isn't promising the answers are correct.

A Dartmouth labor economist made the same point as Erickson to WCAX this week, about VIP: "More productivity is more growth... But the question is, how does that pie get sliced?"

3. Answer the question you get every day, once

Paste five customer emails (names removed) and ask:

“List the questions these customers are asking, then write one short, friendly answer for each that I can save as a canned reply.”

4. Turn a shoebox of receipts into a spreadsheet

Photograph 10 receipts and upload them (free plans allow limited uploads). Ask:

“Make a table with date, vendor, amount and category. Flag any receipt you can’t read instead of guessing.”

Check the totals against the paper. AI misreads numbers.

5. Plan for stick season and mud season

“I run [type of business] in [town], Vermont. Business drops in November and April. Give me five low-cost ideas to bring in local customers during those weeks, and a one-paragraph email for each.”

6. Rewrite a job posting so people finish reading it

Paste your current posting and ask:

“Rewrite this in plain English under 150 words. Put pay, hours and location in the first three lines.”

7. Read a long document without reading all of it

Upload a grant guideline, town bylaw or lease to Gemini Notebook, Google’s tool formerly called NotebookLM (notebooklm.google.com), and ask:

“What do I have to do, by when, and what happens if I miss it? Quote the section for each answer.”

Read the quoted sections yourself before acting.

8. Test the tool before you trust it

The Vermont Agency of Transportation writes test questions and grades AI answers before relying on a tool. Do a small version: write 10 questions about your business that you know the answers to, ask them, and mark each answer right, wrong or incomplete.

9. Draft a week of social posts in one sitting

“Write three short Facebook posts for [business] in [town], Vermont, for next week. One practical tip, one behind-the-scenes, one about an event or offer. No hashtags except our town name.”

1. South Burlington: OnLogic is selling for $675 million. Headquarters and jobs stay put.
OnLogic, the industrial computer maker off Interstate 89, agreed to be bought by Omron, a Kyoto-based automation company. The price is $675 million. The companies announced it Oct. 13, and the deal is expected to close in or around January 2027, pending regulatory approval.

OnLogic says its global headquarters, including manufacturing and engineering, will stay in South Burlington. It has 300 employees worldwide, 160 of them in Vermont. It will keep its brand, its leadership team under CEO Sean Larkin, and run as an independent business inside Omron.

Employees get a “thank you” bonus of $1,500 for each month they’ve worked there. A five-year employee gets $90,000. Shareholding employees, 167 of them per Omron’s filing, also get an equity payout.

Omron wants OnLogic for its rugged edge computers, the machines that run AI and automation on factory floors and in rough conditions rather than in a distant data center. Omron’s CEO said manufacturing is becoming “more connected, data-driven and intelligent.” OnLogic started at a kitchen table in 2003 as Logic Supply.

2. Montpelier: the state has a backup chatbot, and it’s cheap on purpose.
It’s called ChatVT. It’s an internal AI assistant for state employees, and about 500 of them use it each week, according to Rose Vath, who runs AI and business intelligence at the Agency of Transportation. She spoke to the Partnership for Public Service’s AI Center for Government (Oct. 8).

Vermont already lets state workers use ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, as long as the data is public. The catch is the bill. Every question costs tokens. “ChatVT is our safety hatch if these [tools] start to become financially burdensome,” Vath said. It was designed with “the express goal of cost minimization.”

Vath also floated a public version for small businesses. So far that’s only an idea.

For anyone running a shop, the testing is the useful part. Her team is building an AI tool that answers questions from about 75 of the agency’s procedures, manuals and handbooks. Before anyone relies on it, they’re writing a library of test prompts and having testers grade the answers for accuracy and completeness.

3. Your school district: the state says no ChatGPT-style chatbots before high school. It doesn’t know who turned them on.
Vermont’s Agency of Education guidance, out since January, says no AI chatbots for pre-K through grade 2, only lesson-limited AI for grades 3 to 5, and school-designed chatbots under a teacher’s direction for grades 6 to 8. General-purpose chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini wait for high school. The agency’s own site says the guidance is not a mandate.

Compass Vermont (Oct. 12) asked which districts let students use Google’s Gemini. The answer: “We do not collect this level of specificity.” Every Vermont school system uses Google’s education software. Since August, Gemini inside Google Classroom has been on by default for students in districts that have also turned on Gemini or Google’s Notebook tool. Districts can switch it off for students under 18.

The latest state survey covers 2023 to 2024. About 5 of Vermont’s 54 school systems had any AI policy or notice. 16 didn’t require their software vendors to sign student data privacy agreements. Senate Education Chair Seth Bongartz, D-Bennington, says his committee will likely take up AI next session. He’d like a model policy, not a ban.

4. Attorney General’s office: Character.AI is in bankruptcy. The states want its users’ chats protected.
Attorney General Charity Clark said Oct. 14 that Vermont joined a coalition of state attorneys general filing a notice in the bankruptcy of Character Technologies, the company behind the Character.AI chatbot. The worry is what happens to the data in a sale. The company holds private chatbot conversations, from children and adults, about mental health, relationships and emotional struggles. The states want protections attached to any sale of the business or its assets, and say the company’s voluntary limits on minors could be reversed by a new owner.

“Filing for bankruptcy does not absolve a company of its obligations under consumer protection laws,” Clark said.

5. Statehouse: the signed Anthropic agreement is posted. We missed it.
Last week we said the signed agreement for the state’s free Anthropic trial hadn’t been made public. It had. On Oct. 7 the Legislature’s IT oversight committee posted a document titled “Signed contract with VT and Anthropic,” alongside the Agency of Digital Services’ written answers. We regret the error.

The agreement covers a six-month evaluation of Claude for Enterprise, including Claude Security and Claude Code “with cyber defense runbooks,” with $100,000 in credits. Either side can end it at any time with notice. Liability on each side is capped at $1,000 or the fees paid. The agency’s answers say the agreement was reviewed by its general counsel and its chief data and AI officer, and signed in June by the agency’s then-serving chief information security officer.

Secretary Denise Reilly-Hughes’ last day was set for Friday, Oct. 16. Deputy Andrea DeLaBruere takes over as interim. The committee meets next on Oct. 29.

Try this: before you trust an AI tool with your manual, price list or procedures, write 10 questions you already know the answers to. Run them. Grade every answer. That’s what the Agency of Transportation is doing before it relies on its own tool.

Skip this: handing a whole workflow to an AI agent when one AI step inside the process you already have would do. “Injecting one use of AI into a deterministic workflow is far less risky,” as Vath put it.

1. Montpelier: the state is using AI as a “power tool.”

Vermont’s chief data and AI officer, Josiah Raiche, told StateScoop (Oct. 2) the state has moved into an “enablement phase.” About 100 state developers have been trained to use AI tools to find and fix security holes across roughly 1,100 state applications, with another 50 developers expected to join the training. Compass Vermont reports the work has produced patches for several dozen applications, and that developers review and test changes before they go in.

The most relatable example: Secretary of State staff checking hundreds of draft ballots against a spreadsheet of about 3,000 candidates, days before the print deadline. The AI flagged likely errors as a first pass. Staff then reviewed every ballot themselves. Raiche said the job took three hours.

2. Statehouse: lawmakers say they found out by accident.

That security work runs on a free six-month trial of Anthropic’s Claude Code, signed June 15, worth $100,000 in usage credits. Rep. Laura Sibilia, I-Dover, says she learned of it at a state tech conference on Aug. 4. She has asked who authorized it, what Vermont agreed to, and whether the credits count as a “thing of value” that needs legislative approval. The Agency of Digital Services says it does not, and that it did not treat the free evaluation as a procurement.

At the Sept. 30 oversight hearing, the agency said developers sent pieces of test and development code, not live systems with Vermonters’ records. The agency’s written answers, dated Oct. 7, say no personal information or Vermonters’ data was reviewed, and that future trials like this will go through the state’s full contract review. The trial is set to be added to the state’s public AI inventory in January 2027.

Still open, per Compass Vermont: the signed agreement itself has not been made public, and it is unclear whether Vermont used Anthropic’s scanner after Aug. 21, when that tool switched to its more powerful Mythos model.

3. Agency of Digital Services: the secretary is leaving.

Gov. Phil Scott announced Oct. 7 that Digital Services Secretary Denise Reilly-Hughes is leaving for a private-sector job. Her last day is Oct. 16. Deputy Andrea DeLaBruere will serve as interim secretary. The departure lands mid-trial, with the Anthropic evaluation running through December and a $70 million overhaul of state HR and finance systems underway.

Teach it a repeat job once. Ask a Bot to follow along while you do a workflow one time. It saves the steps as a routine and can run it on its own next time, even on a schedule.

Is Grok Bot the same as Grok?

No. Grok is the chatbot at grok.com and inside X. Grok Bot is the separate agent app, where Bots do jobs on their own computer.

Do I need to pay?

Yes, beyond the trial. Grok Bot access comes with Cursor Pro ($20 a month), higher Cursor plans, or SuperGrok ($30 a month). The trial is a usage credit, so start with small jobs.

What should I let it touch first?

Nothing with money or your inbox on day one. Give it a contained job, watch what it does, and use the approval step. Connect more once you trust the routine.

A new chat window does not finish the admin. The work starts when one repeating job has a written instruction and a person still checks the result.

Most people try AI the same way they try a new app. They open it once, ask a clever question, and go back to the inbox.

The tool is not the job. The job is the thing you already do every week: sort mail, chase a quote, move a date, or copy a note from one place to another.

Start with one job

Pick a task you can describe in a few sentences. If you cannot say who it is for, what done looks like, and what it must never do, an agent will wander.

Keep the login

You keep every account. An agent should use a connection you can turn off, not a password pasted into a chat. If someone asks for the password to your email, stop.

Check the work

For the first week, the agent drafts and you send. That is slower on purpose. It shows whether the instruction is clear before anything reaches a customer.

When one job is steady, add a second.

Claude's getting-started page for Cowork was updated September 25, 2026. The note at the top says Cowork is now just Claude, rolling out gradually to Pro and Max. If the message box still shows Chat and Cowork, you pick Cowork, describe the task, and review the approach before it runs. It is on paid plans: Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Desktop, web, and mobile do not all show it the same way. Enterprise can be off until an admin turns it on.

Do this once

What you need

- A tool that can read mail and, if you want, save drafts

Make three labels

- Reply today

- Waiting

- Skip

Reply today is a person who asked you something. Waiting is a receipt, a newsletter, or a thread you already answered. Skip is noise you will not open.

Write the instruction

Paste this, then edit the examples so they sound like your mail.

Sort each new message into Reply today, Waiting, or Skip. Reply today means a customer, a vendor, or a person who asked a question only I can answer. Waiting means receipts, shipping, and threads where I already sent the last note. Skip means promotions and mail I never open. Do not send, delete, archive, or forward. Do not open attachments. If a message might be a customer, put it in Reply today.

Test on ten messages

Run it on mail you have already read. If two of the ten land in the wrong pile, fix the instruction before you point it at today's inbox.

Drafts, not sends

If the tool can write a draft, let it draft replies only for Reply today, in your voice, and leave them unsent. You send. That one rule prevents the mistake people regret.

What this covers

This sorts mail. It does not book jobs or take payment. When the sort is right, the usual next step is a draft, then a reminder, then a person who builds it into the tools you already pay for.

Name the job

Write one sentence: "Each weekday morning, sort new mail into needs a reply, can wait, and ignore."

Add three rules:

- Do not send, delete, or forward anything

- Do not open attachments

- If you are unsure, leave it in needs a reply

Give it only what that job needs

Connect the inbox as read, or as draft-only if the tool can save drafts. Leave the calendar, the bank, and the website alone until this job is boring.

Run it beside you

For five mornings, compare the agent's sort with yours. Change the instruction when it misses the same kind of message twice. Save the instruction where you can find it next month.

Stop when it is steady

A working agent is a saved instruction plus a habit of checking it. If the job needs your files, your tone, and a person on the hook when it fails, that is setup work, not a longer prompt.

Open perplexity.ai. On September 25, 2026 the page asked "What do you want to know?" with an "Ask anything..." box. Search is the mode that looks things up and cites them. Computer is a separate button for handing off a project. Leave Computer alone until Search has answered you once.

Sign In is at the bottom of the left sidebar. Clicking it opened a box that says "Sign up below to unlock the full potential of Perplexity." Open grok.com. On September 25, 2026 the page loaded a box under "What should we explore?" You can type before you have an account. The footer says messaging Grok means you agree to the terms. A signed-out chat is a bad place to leave anything you want back later.

1. Montpelier: $100K in Anthropic credits, and a fight over who said yes.

The Agency of Digital Services signed an agreement with Anthropic on June 15 for about $100,000 in credits for Claude Code, an agentic coding tool. Officials say they are using it to find security and operational weaknesses that would take humans years to catch. Vermont is in an early cohort of Anthropic’s SLTT Cyber Defenders Program alongside Texas and California, according to documents Vermont Public reviewed.

ADS Secretary Denise Reilly-Hughes says the work runs in a contained environment with a human in the loop, and that Claude Code is not the same class of autonomous frontier model tied to recent OpenAI incidents.

Legislators on the Joint Information Technology Oversight Committee say they were not briefed early. Rep. Laura Sibilia (I-Dover) said she learned about it at a conference in August. Rep. Monique Priestley (D-Bradford) asked what systems it touches: voter data, health, SNAP, DMV, and what happens when something goes wrong.

1. Montpelier: two answers to the same AI question.

WPTZ sat down with the two candidates for governor on Thursday. Phil Scott said he still wants federal rules, not a new state stack. He pointed to the AI Economic Task Force he named this summer and said shutting the tools down is not realistic. “AI is already here,” he said. “It can be used for good. It can also be used in countermeasures that wouldn’t be conducive to good government.”

Amanda Janoo said the question has been backward. “The focus has been for too long, like, ‘How do we use this technology?’ As opposed to how do we actually protect ourselves from this technology, which is what we’re hearing from the tech companies themselves.” Cybersecurity would sit at the top of her list.

That is the same split that produced the H.727 veto in May. Scott said that Act 250 and the Public Utility Commission already cover a large data center. Janoo told Seven Days in early September that the federal government is trying to limit what states can do and that opening the state to five companies for jobs is a bad trade. Election Day is November 3.

2. Vernon: the reactor is gone. The next use is not.

The Brattleboro Reformer toured the old Vermont Yankee site last week. Scott State, now NorthStar’s executive chairman, called the demolition “99 percent done.” The five-story reactor building is down. About $8.5 million is left in the decommissioning trust. Physical work is slated to finish in 2027. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission still has to release the land, which State said could take a couple of years.

As a condition of the tour, NorthStar would not discuss PowerTransitions, the Texas firm that holds a lease to study reuse. The Reformer still named the options on the table: battery storage next to the VELCO substation, a data center, or a small modular reactor. Vernon officials have said the town’s focus is batteries.

H.727 is still vetoed. If a data-center plan shows up in Vernon, the review runs through the rules that already exist, not the statute the legislature passed in May.

It would create a five-member Federal Digital Commission with power to pause a frontier model for up to six months, require pre-certification, and fine a firm up to 15 percent of last year’s global revenue.
